Your Travel Pack-n-Go Capsule Wardrobe!

When it’s time to take that long awaited vacation the question of “What to Wear” always comes up, along with “How do I pack?”. Using my method for your capsule wardrobe and how to pack it answers both those questions.

First, determine your color story for your trip. As shown in the picture I chose orange, yellow, white and denim. You might choose black, red, white and denim with a print including black, red and white. It is helpful to start with colors that you can mix and match so you can build your wardrobe around that theme.

Second, what items will you absolutely need? Bathing suit? How many? Are you attending a wedding? Have a dress to wear? Set aside those items to go in your suitcase.

Next choose shoes and accessories. Think minimal and versatile here- often we pack way too many shoes. You want your shoes to be functional. Example: a pair of slides can be worn with a skirt, pants or shorts. Sneakers can be worn on a hike or with a skirt for a casual day trip. Take jewelry that will accentuate your outfits and create a fun statement. Add sunglasses, hats, belts and scarves that can be worn with multiple outfits. A scarf may be worn on your head, wrapped around your hat or as a sarong over your bathing suit.

Pack using the Power of 3. This is my capsule wardrobe method. Three tops, three bottoms and three layering items. With your color story you can mix and match and literally create 20-30 different looks!

Now to the packing.

When packing your suitcase make sure your heaviest items are at the bottom of the bag. This ensures your clothes don’t get smooshed and messed up as they get tossed about on their plane trip.

Roll and Wrap! I love these HIbag travel compression bags. Not only do they shrink your clothes to pack more efficiently, but they also protect your clothing from liquids that may leak or getting wet from rain if they’re left on the tarmac during a rainstorm. Another plus-they are re-usable.

The Carry on

Before you depart, know your airlines policies on what is allowed, how many items and size restrictions. Overseas flight rules differ greatly from domestic flight rules.

I like to carry a tote bag and keep my purse inside. I also carry any valuables and needed items with me on my carry on. Laptops, iPad, etc. should be on your person, never in checked luggage. I wear contacts so if I decide to wear my glasses on the plane my contacts are in my carry-on.

Wear your heaviest items on the plane

Planes tend to be cold, so layering is a good thing. It also lightens your suitcase. I usually wear a shirt with tank layered and one of my jackets, and if I’m taking jeans, I wear them on the plane too. Often, I’ll wear a scarf around my neck, and my heaviest shoes. When I reach my destination if it’s much warmer, I simply remove the layers!

And there you have it! Following these simple guidelines will alleviate the stress of what to take and help with efficient packing. A few strategic moves and your trip will go without a hitch!

As always, my goal is for you to be Comfortable, Confident, & Styled.

Have a Styling Day

XOXO
